Aug 17-19, 1918 War Diary: drills and swimming

Aug 17

Have been out drilling most of the day and it has been beastly hot. No fresh beef yet. This corned beef is sickening & hope they get hold of some fresh beef before long. Mess is bum. Went down to the river for a swim this evening.

Sunday 18

Took a bunch to the river for a swim. Did my washing while I was waiting. The river water is very soft and clothes are easily washed in it. Got back at noon and went out picking blackberries in p.m.

Tom Chavey, 1st Sgt. had an awful burn on this p.m. and captain sent him to his quarters.

Aug 19 - Monday

Today our training schedule starts and I expect there will be little time to ourselves from now on. Had plenty of work all day and am going down to the river tonight for a swim. Expect to write letters tonight. No mail. Chaplain got us some tobacco today and we certainly were glad to get it.
