August 21, 1918/ Wednesday War Diary: learning French

This has been another scorching hot day and I’m all in tonight. Did a lot of hiking today. Sgts are drilling their own sections individually now and it’s some job. Funeral in town today and all the people attended. O’Jibway talked with some Frenchmen back from the front today and they seem to think that the Huns won’t last must longer. Everyone is trying to talk French and I have purchased a "parley voo" manual and have joined the "nuts." I can say "wei, wei" and "no compre" already.
