Nov 5th 18 Letter Home: Moving the Front Lines
My dear Alberta,
....Thought I would try to write you a few lines this morning while I am waiting for my blankets to dry out. Am sitting at the door of my dugout sunning myself and trying to decide whether to shave or not before dinner. Guess I’ll write letters anyway as it’s the first chance I’ve had in some time. ....
.......We have been in action for the last three days and up to last night we hadn’t had any casualties. Last night was pretty quiet so I presume everything is O.K. this a.m. I haven’t been up to the guns yet but expect to go up tonight. I am back of the lines with our supplies in the woods and am occupying a dugout that the Huns built about three years ago.
We expect to move up again tonight so I guess the Huns are backing up yet. They have been driving them pretty hard lately and making it pretty hot for them. I’ve got lots of souvenirs and hope I can bring some of them home with me. Wish I could tell you what part of the front we are on but this is impossible. At any rate, we’re right up there where there is action and plenty of it. The boys advanced seven kilometers (about 5 miles) yesterday a.m. and bombarded them heavily all the rest of the day and last night....
....We haven’t received any mail for nearly two weeks but we’ve been on the move so much that nobody has received any. But we don’t complain as long as the Huns are backing up how much we have to move up....
P.S. .....Nov 6th
We have moved and are now occupying a small shell torn village. Our guns are in position and are firing tonight. We fired the first shot in the regiment and were the first to take position on the line. Will write again in a day or two. Lots of airplanes and air battles here.
